Starflyer 59

The Jacksonville Starflyer 59 show was pretty awesome. Though getting there was a nightmare! Seems there was a race in Daytona. It took two hours in first and second gear the whole way from Orlando to Daytona! It should take only forty minutes normally. I was so afraid my car was going to overheat. I made it in time to visit with my cousin for a while and to catch the second Florida show (Tampa was the night before) for this multi-band traveling tour.

I missed the first band..... I wasn't sure if I missed Pep Squad or The Calicoes. California trio Upside Down Room were quite better live than the recordings I've hear from them. They play 50's style rebel biker pop songs with overdriven guitars . They had the sound and look. They wore rolled up jeans, tucked in t-shirts, workboots and hankerchiefs hanging out of their back pockets. They only played five or six songs. Much too short. I was wishing for more. They were excellent.

I'm not too sure what to say about the next band . Rockin'emo maybe? I don't know who they were (either Pep Squad or the Calicoes). They said they were going to have a CD out on Tooth and Nail Records. For some reason the singer/guitar player looked liked the bass player for the Get Up Kids. Theirbass player looked like he was having a really good time. He never stopped hopping around the stage. The covered 'Miss World' by Hole.... if that means anything. It seemed really out of place.

Starflyer 59 did nine songs (they said they only learned ten for the tour). It was funny when someone called out for "Canary Row" and Jason Martin had this puzzled look on his face and asks "What song is that?" like he forgot he has a song by that title. I was a big dork and wrote down the songs. They started off with a new song off the new CD 'The Fashion Focus'. At the time I was unfamiliar with the album so I can't say which one. Then they did "Translator" followed by another new one. Next was "All The Time," a quiet song. That followed by "Voyager" "She's Gone Away" "House Wife Love Song" and "Hazelwould." They closed with the rocker "Le Vainqueur."

They had a drummer who I didn't recognize. It wasn't Wayne Everett. Jeff Cloud was on bass. They sounded much better this show rather than the other time I saw them in 1996. I just wish SF59 would have a non-rocking live show. Their slow music is so pretty and dreamy. Great show.
