Hot Hands Tour Diary Day Two: Going to Miami.

I use a Sony Ericsson W810i phone to take these.

If you missed part one it is here.

Driving

After leaving St. Petersburg we took the slower roads (Traveling on interstates is BORING) like Highway 41 all the way to Port Charlotte then across to Immokalee down to Alligator Alley going through Panther preserves. They have large fences all along the way to keep the animals from the road.

driving

Nope. We did not see any alligators or panthers. But there is one on the dashboard.

Tom Tom Magazine

Our first stop in Miami was Sweat Records for a female drummer workshop by Tom Tom Magazine. It was hosted by Mindy Abovitz, interviewing several drummers and artists about their drumming and art projects. The most interesting interview was the interview with Nabedi Osorio. She even brought up one of her 9 year old drumming students to show off her skills. Tom Tom Magazine were having an all female drummer showcase at Churchills Pub later that night. We weren't playing that show- we had one a few miles away at a warehouse space simply called Suite 205.

205

We arrived to Suite 205, a block away from Basel Castle. No one was there. Several phone calls later the hosts came around. They were flyering for the show several blocks away writing the address and time using pen and notebook paper and handing them out. Whhaaaaaa? The moment we met The Alvarez brothers (Greg and Eddie) I knew we were going to be in for a treat. They were also with a guy named Gilahd. Immediate and instant friends. They led us up to the second floor of a huge sectioned out warehouse shared by artists and businesses. Right off the bat we were treated to a special Dominican drink called Mamajuana, which is a mixture of herbs, leaves, tree bark and rum and other things I can't remember. It was pretty awesome. Then we put beers in plastic bags and walked around Art Basel.

Art Basel

Now the thing about this weekend in Miami they were hosting the world famous Art Basel, which is a big deal in the art world. To say the downtown are was nuts would be and understatement. There were people everywhere, walking around the streets, going into art galleries, waiting in line for Basel Castle. The picture above was one of the galleries.

205

We came back to 205 and our friends in Haiochi Waves showed up. It was nice seeing them. We have been fans of their old band Pretty Please for a few years and played with them in Orlando earlier this year. There was a resident dog. Do you see him to the left of the piano?

205

I love the left panel on this photo. The party was slowly getting started. There wasn't a lot of people so we took the opportunity to go get beers with Haiochi Waves at the gas station and went over back to Art Basel to go get some food.

205

There were a bunch of food trucks. Kristin got some arepas from Mr Good Stuff. I went to one called Mangia Mia and had a droolworth meatball sub. It had a super crunchy bread on the outside and soft on the inside. It was heavenly!

Haiochi Waves

By the time we walked back after eating Suite 205 was packed and the first band was just finishing up. It was Honey Train- who I've missed seeing twice now. I hope a next time is in order. Haiochi Waves was next. I've been curious to find out how this new band sounds. They went from a five member band to three. The new band is more rocking for sure. It was some good music. Didi Aragon plays guitar, Ana Farina Mackliff plays bass, and Juan Fernando Oña bangs the drums. They all sing so the sound like a million bucks.

205

It was a miracle this pinata survived two nights worth of parties.

The Gun Hoes

South Florida band The Gun Hoes was pretty neat. They are a duo and play fun garage pop music that reminded me of Nodzzz.

205

More and more people were showing up. Inside 205 was hopping, so was outside in the hallways.

Jellyfish Brothers

Jellyfish Brothers

The hosts, the Alvarez brothers, were up to task to rock out. They are called The Jellyfish Brothers with Greg on guitar/vocals, Eddie on drums and a bassist whose name I can't remember. It was a psychedelic trip through a surfy universe.

Hot Hands

These photos of us (Hot Hands) were taken by Ron Gesualdo. The idea of hauling up my two cabinets up the stairs of this warehouse was not a good idea. We borrowed drums and two amps from the other bands. Kristin and I had not played Miami in years and never as Hot Hands. Kristin played with Jeanie and the Tits maybe in 2007 and we both played in Courtneys on our 2006 tour. It's been a long time and we were glad to be back.

After we played was an indierockish folk outfit called Animal Tropical. They balanced out our loud set with some laid back tunes.

205

Ice Cream

This band Ice Cream was pretty intense. They have a good energy and a frontman straight outta the Dischord school for punks.

Claws

By the time noisy Claws played it was after 3:30am! There was still a lot of people hanging out. What a cool scene!

Miami Cottage

It was after 4am by the time we left the warehouse. We stayed at Juan's (Haiochi Waves) cottage and he and Ana made us some breakfast burritos. We can't get enough! So good. The little compound was pretty neat. The tree in the backyard had chairs up in it's branches.

We drove home all the way on A1A until we got to Lake Worth and then drove the rest of the way on the boring I-95, only so we didn't get back home too late. More adventures to come: always check hot hands.
